BREATHING AND RELAXING |
The energy you feel after a few minutes of careful breathing isn't jittery or hyperactive, it's the calm, steady energy we all crave.Slow, steady, and quiet breathing gives a message to your nervous system: Be calm.Whole books had been written on yoga breathing.
Here is one 5-minute Breath Break. (Read through the instructions several times before you try the practice.)
1.Sit with your spine as straight as possible. Use a chair if necessary, but do not slide on it. Feet are flat on the floor, knees are directly over the middle of the foot. Place a book or a pillow under your feet if they are not comfortably flat on the floor. The hands are on the legs.
2. Gently close your eyes and let them rest under closed lids.
3. Think about your ribs in the front, back and sides of your body. Your lungs are behind those ribs.
4. Feel your lungs fill, your ribs expand and heave. Feel your lungs empty as your ribs move back down and in. Don't force your breath to do it.
5.Do it for 2-3 minutes the first few times and then up to 5-10 minutes. In the beginning, take the time to do this at least once a day. Once you know how good you feel, you want to do it at other times too.
Just as a stressful situation becomes a new challenge, a few minutes of relaxation each day will gradually affect the rest of your life and your daily activities.
